Education is a traditional sector, but technological advancements make it prime for disruption. We are standing at the dawn of the Artificial Intelligence era. Concepts such as Natural Language Processing and Natural Language Understanding are becoming more and more commonplace.

Consider this report, which says that the number of post secondary graduates will be around 350 million in the next decade. The world will also add close to 800 million K12 graduates, compared to today, in the next decade. 

The sheer numbers are mind boggling, and, only with a technological intervention can we adequately address all these students. One of the solutions to provide quick responses – chatbots.

Chatbots have been known to address the problem to too many users asking similar questions. One such institute facing a challenge was the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute, located in the beautiful capital city of Nassau. About BTVI

The Bahamas has had a long history of imparting education to its young students. Education is compulsory in the country from the ages of 5 to 16. This mostly explains the impressive literacy rate in the country, which stands at around 95.6%, according to Wikipedia.

The Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute (BTVI) came into existence due to an Act of Parliament and began operations on 1 July 2011. The institute offers courses as diverse as Electronics Engineering to Fashion Design, Cosmetology and even Auto Mechanics.

The student enrollment numbers are close to 2100, in various programs offered by the university.

BTVI and Kommunicate – The need for a chatbot solution

During COVID, everyone transitioned online. BTVI had a situation where students could not meet their counsellors and teachers physically in the office. Students where often reaching out to BTVI via email, but some of the emails were falling through the cracks. Students didn’t get answers as quickly as expected.

Also, the institute’s population grew during the COVID period, and there were more students and instructors to deal with than ever before. To deal with all these queries, the IT team looked at many solutions, and chatbots was one of them.

Once the team knew that a chatbot would solve their issues, the BTVI team started searching for a chatbot solution that was easy to use, and would solve all of BTVI’s problems.

The search for the perfect chatbot solution came to an end when BTVI found Kommunicate.

Assigning different people to different departments, and transferring the student’s queries to the respective department easily is one of the features that really impressed BTVI. The chatbots can easily transfer a conversation to a particular department, which is a very useful feature.

There are students spread across multiple islands in the Bahamas. Irrespective of the time at which the students posted the queries, there was a need for a response. This is a classic chatbot use case. While the chatbot was able to answer most of the queries these students had, it could also successfully transfer the queries to an operator when it didn’t know the answer.
